A Time For Review and Reflection

This first marking period of my junior year has thus far been very challenging.  The many tough classes I have elected to take have not failed to produce many tough assignments.  Tests, essays, and homeworks have clouded my life for the past month, creating a very stressful beginning of the year.  And this is amid the SAT work, too.

But anyways, Mr. Mogg’s 11th grade language arts class has overall been great.  To start of the class, Mr. Mogg had each of us create a mantra for ourselves.  The mantra I chose was “Knowledge is Power”, a line that I try to apply to school and my life everyday.  Learning is a very powerful thing, and Mr. Mogg’s language arts class has not failed to teach.  The assigned themes have been very interesting, improving my writing.  I enjoyed writing about a current issue that interested me for the first theme and about the great hero of Atticus Finch for the second.  Along the lines of Atticus Finch, our first marking period core novel was fabulous.  Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird was a great read, as it is one of the greatest American classics of all time.  The work we did along the lines of Lee’s novel, from the blog on which I am writing on now to the musical connections we have found to the book, was very informative.

The beginning of my 11th grade year has been a fun one so far.  Language arts is no exception.  I hope that Mr. Mogg’s class continues to provide me with a wealth of knowledge throughout the next three marking periods, as it has done so very well in the current first one.

  1. Your mantra has inspired me to do more work, through out the school year. I feel that I am in the same boat as you with SAT's and all the other things that junior year consists of. I think that once we make it through this year, then we will be happier and will be more prepared for the real world.

  2. You did a very good job in setting up a background to the junior year, then making concise, but deep and thoughtful comments on language arts and life itself. This was a very well written post in every regard, good length, good writing, and good description. Excellent job, Bennett!

  3. I believe your are right in every way, Knowledge is indeed power. In class everyday I learn so much from To Kill a Mocking Bird that it never gets old. You picked a fitting mantra and used it well in expressing your feelings for this class. I found it hard to keep up at first but with your mantra it inspires to do more.

  4. First, I will say that your picture is very funny and a great addition to the blog. I thought the mantra you chose is truthful and fits you perfectly. It is interesting to see that the themes improved your writing. I agree that this core novel was great. It was a classic piece of literature that I thoughtfully enjoyed.

  5. Bennett, I have a similar opinion of English class so far. My writing and reading techniques have been improved as well. I have actually found the first marking period to be less difficult than I expected, mainly because this is said to be the hardest and most important year of school. I would like to know how you felt about "Life of Pi" and the rest of the assignments we have had. Overall, this is a well written post.
